Following a successful training program in France, Yuvraj
Singh – explosive left-handed Indian batsman – has made yet another comeback in
the national side. He is selected for the home series against Australia starting
on 10th October for the only Twenty20 International match at Rajkot
and first three One Day Internationals at Pune, Jaipur and Mohali. His last appearance
in international cricket was in January this year and was sidelined since then.
Yuvraj Singh has played 40 Test matches, 282 One Day
Internationals and 33 Twenty20 International matches for India since his
arrival at the international scene 13 years ago. His aggregate of 8119 runs in
One Day Internationals makes him a member of top five run getters for India besides
Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin with a
strike rate of 87.39 highest among top five. Similarly Yuvraj Singh’s aggregate
of 791 Twenty20 International is third highest after Gautam Gambhir and Suresh
Raina while his strike rate of 148.68 in this format of international cricket
is not matched by any of his fellow countrymen.
His performance is more belligerent in limited overs cricket
than five days long Test matches, probably because his aggression is more
dominant than his technique and temperament. Yuvraj Singh bravely defeated
cancer to exhibit his tenacity as he was treated for nearly three months in USA
and resumed his international career afterwards.
His father Yograj Singh was a hostile fast bowler who became
famous in a first class game against touring Pakistan team in 1979 at Amritsar
when he broke Pakistani opener Talat Mirza’s stump in two pieces two years
before Yuvraj was born. Yograj Singh played only one Test match but successfully
inculcated love and spirit of cricket in his talented son. Yuvraj Singh is
brave and aggressive but the greatest quality is the tenacity he has – he always
comes back and performs high when he is dropped from the national side.
